Life Through The Lens – Part II – June 30 Image

Continuing on with images from my recent safari to South Africa, here is a shot of a Grey Heron watching the proceedings going on below him. I had rented a 500mm lens for the trip and while I certainly did not need it for the animals, it came in handy for the birds.

This afternoon the Tall Ships arrived in Hamilton. The 2 pictured here, I believe to be the Sorlandet out if Norway is 57 meters long. It was built in 1927. The 2nd one, which is the black one is the Fair Jeanne. It is out of Ottawa, Ontario and is 34 meters long. They certainly are beautiful!

I am going to take a break from the Africa shots for a couple of days. This morning I flew into Montreal and got my rental car from the airport. When you travel a lot, sometimes you get very nice perks. This morning, to my surprise, they handed me the keys to an Audi A4! This beauty had 46 kilometers on it! It is a lot of fun to drive! Too bad I don’t have much time with it.

Face of the Leopard. This beautiful female leopard was very carefully watching a Hyena crossing a river. The Hyenas track the leopards and try to steal their kills.

This is one of the most beautiful birds we saw on the safari in South Africa. It is a Lilac Breasted Roller. This is the national bird of Botswana & Kenya. They are usually found alone or in pairs.

After a very long 2 days of travel, 5 airports and running like crazy, we are home! It was an incredible adventure and one I would do again! If you ever get an opportunity to do an African Safari, do it! You will not be disappointed.

For the next several days, my Life Through The Lens project will feature many of the incredible animals we saw in Kruger National Park. In addition I will begin working on a book of the images I took which will be available for sale down the road.

Here is a shot of the African Wild Dogs I spoke about in an earlier post.

This morning was our last safari. As with all of the other safaris, it was amazing! The one lion down at the river which had killed a giraffe the other day had finally been joined by the rest of the pride. On our way to the lions we drove past these zebras.

Tonight is our last full night in South Africa and on safari. It has been an amazing experience! The lodge where we have stayed for the past 5 nights has been nothing short of incredible! The people are so friendly and dedicated, the food delicious and the guides and trackers knowledgable and fantastic. If you have an opportunity to visit South Africa and do a safari I highly recommend Lion Sands Game Reserve. You will not be disappointed. Today’s safari’s were as wonderful as all of the others. This evening we saw African Wild Dogs which are rare to see. There are only about 350 of these dogs in total in Kruger National Park. Their hunting skills are legendary and they kill approximately 70% of what they hunt. Today’s image, while it could have been any one of the amazing animals we saw today, I decided it was going to be a classic African sunset. I hope you enjoy.AfricanSunset_9209
