World Lion Day – August 10, 2013

Today is World Lion Day. The lion is one of the worlds most iconic species. It can be found on almost every continent and in thousands of cultures demonstrating man’s fascination with this magnificent beast. Despite all of this, lions are facing extinction in Africa and India. However this plight is not well known.

Today we must celebrate this amazing animal and create conservation awareness to help save the King of Beasts and his kingdom.

These guys are one of the most dangerous animals in South Africa. It is an African Buffalo and is very unpredictable in its behaviour which makes it dangerous. They have never been domesticated unlike its counterpart, the Asian Water Buffalo.

Happy 4th of July to all of my American followers! I hope you are enjoying your holiday!

Todays image is yet another from my recent safari to Kruger National Park in South Africa. This guy is a Hooded Vulture. Wherever Lions were found, these guys were not too far away, awaiting their turn.

One of the days during our safari, we set up in a blind at a watering hole to see what would come by. An hour or so after we arrived this elephant and her young pup came by to get a drink.

Another shot from our safari to Kruger National Park in South Africa. These guys were not as abundant as I had been led to believe. We did see a few of them, but not the numbers that I thought we might.

Happy Canada Day! I am proud to live in such a safe, strong and free country! Canada is so diverse and welcoming to all. We have very friendly people, incredible scenery from coast to coast and amazing wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, here is another image from my recent safari to Kruger National Park in South Africa. This guy is a Spotted Hyena. The Hyena’s follow the Leopards more often than not hoping to steal a kill from them.

Continuing on with images from my recent safari to South Africa, here is a shot of a Grey Heron watching the proceedings going on below him. I had rented a 500mm lens for the trip and while I certainly did not need it for the animals, it came in handy for the birds.

“My what big teeth you have…All the better to eat with you with little girl!”

In this case he was yawning and not roaring!

Face of the Leopard. This beautiful female leopard was very carefully watching a Hyena crossing a river. The Hyenas track the leopards and try to steal their kills.

After a very long 2 days of travel, 5 airports and running like crazy, we are home! It was an incredible adventure and one I would do again! If you ever get an opportunity to do an African Safari, do it! You will not be disappointed.

For the next several days, my Life Through The Lens project will feature many of the incredible animals we saw in Kruger National Park. In addition I will begin working on a book of the images I took which will be available for sale down the road.

Here is a shot of the African Wild Dogs I spoke about in an earlier post.
